Required Knowledge
For upgrading in the Martial Arts Discipline of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Kobukan
Karate
Each student is required to know certain terms and aspects of the history
of our style. The further up you go, the more you are required to know. All requirements can’t be listed here, but the
requirements to upgrade the first couple of steps are probably the most difficult, and most are listed on this sheet. Each
student, regardless of rank, is required to know what is listed on this sheet. If there is a problem in pronunciation of any
of the words or phrases contact Sensei or an instructor at any time.
Ranking System
White belt
All beginners are white belts automatically.
Yellow
belt
7-kyu - Yellow belt.
Orange belt 6-kyu - Orange belt.
Green belt
5-kyu - Green belt.
Blue belt 4-kyu - Blue belt with white
Gi top with black pants
Purple belt
3-kyu - Purple belt with white Gi top with black pants.
Brown belt
2-kyu - Brown belt. with white Gi top with black pants.
Red belt
1-kyu - Red belt with center black stripe, White
Gi top with black pants.
Junior Black belt
1-kyu - Black belt with center yellow stripe. All black
Gi. white top with black pants for ceremonies.
1st. Degree Black belt 1st-Dan – All black Gi, White
top for ceremonies one
yellow stripe on belt
2nd. Degree Black belt 2nd-Dan – All black Gi, White top
for ceremonies two
yellow stripes on belt.
3rd. Degree Black belt 3rd-Dan – All black Gi,
White top for ceremonies and
three yellow stripes on belt.
4th. Degree Black belt 4th-Dan – White Gi top black pants and four
yellow stripes on belt.
